Emergency Fire Response Info

Following the fire on Tourney Road on May 31, Jordan and his team at Granite Recreation Park have begun implementing strategies based on lessons learned from that experience and are developing an enhanced response plan for any future fire emergencies.  Your GHHOA Executive has offered its support to Jordan in this important initiative because, as we all know, we are in this together.

As a first step, and at the suggestion of many of the people who stepped up to help fight the fire that day, your GHHOA Executive approved the purchase of two Vanguard Water Jet 5-gallon Wildland Fire Backpacks at a cost of $464.43.  The purchase of this equipment was made possible through your Annual Membership Fee that contributed to the Fire Equipment Fund, the Social Committee Fund as well as $125 raised from the 50/50 draw at our Swing & Sip event.

This equipment has now been provided to Jordan and is attached to the fire trailer located at the Granite Recreation Park.

The second step is the establishment of a Community Fire Emergency Program Volunteer sign-up.

We have included Jordan’s email below, along with a Sign-Up form.  We encourage you to consider becoming a volunteer.  The more prepared we are as a community, the better equipped we will be to respond when needed.

Additional information will be shared in the coming days.  Jordan is also planning a Fire Trailer Training Session that will provide valuable information on fire response procedures and the safe use of available equipment in the event of a fire.

Warm Regards,

Debbie Clement,

Granite Hills Homeowners’ Association

From Jordan Gauthier:

Hello everyone,

We are working on building a volunteer contact list for our community-driven Fire Emergency Program.

The goal is to have a more organized way to contact people quickly in the event of a fire emergency and to better coordinate volunteers who are willing to help.

We are asking residents and community members who are interested to sign up as either a Responder or a Dispatcher.

Responders are volunteers who may be willing to assist with fire suppression efforts using available fire suppression equipment, when it is safe to do so.

Dispatchers are volunteers who may be willing to help contact Responders quickly during an emergency and assist with communication and coordination.

The information collected will be added to a shared volunteer contact list used for emergency planning and communication between the volunteer group.

Please note that this program does not replace calling 911 or contacting the proper emergency services.
In any emergency, 911 should always be contacted first.

If you are interested in being added to the volunteer list, please complete the form by clicking the link below.
Feel free to forward this email to any community members who may be interested in helping.

Thank you to everyone who is willing to help.
Having a contact list and plan in place could make a big difference in an emergency.

Kind regards,

Granite Recreational Park.

Hello Granite Hills Homeowners!

With our annual AGM being in August I wanted to give you an update before then regarding the paving of 433.

Recently a formal ITB (Invitation to Bid) was put out by Manitoba Transportation and Infastructure to asphalt the surface of 433 to Cape Coppermine development.

The ITB can be viewed at this link

https://www.merx.com/mbgov/solicitations/open-bids/ASPHALT-SURFACE-TREATMENT-PR-433-LEE-RIVER-RD-TO-CAPE-COPPERMINE-DEVELOPMENT/0000325258?origin=0

Originally the approved plans included an active transportation lane. Subsequent to this MTI ran into some unforeseen issues which could have delayed the project significantly and as a result they asked council to vote on another plan so they could proceed as soon as possible.

Unfortunately, the new plan does not include the active transportation lane. The AT was an exciting unexpected addition and while disappointing, please keep in mind our main goal of having the road paved.

The new plan will follow the road exactly.

You may have heard that construction was going to begin at the end of 433. This was due to some land issues at the beginning of 433. Because the road is now following the existing road, this is no longer an issue and construction will begin at the start of 433.

As you can see the ITB is asking for bids to Cape Coppermine development. This means Clubhouse Road. As PR 433 ends at Osprey I have confirmed that the bid to Clubhouse will essentially have two sections to it.

1) Cost to Osprey

2) Cost from Osprey to Clubhouse Rd

Council is in discussion with their legal department on how and who will be involved in covering the cost of the second option. I expect an update by our AGM in regards to that.

The ITB ends on July 2 and construction, in some way, is expected to begin this year. There is a lot of work to be done and this job will take a long time to complete. The ITB will have projected completion dates on it.

Thank you for visiting our website and please consider attending our AGM on August 30th in the Granite Hills Clubhouse Tournament Room.

Thank you and have a great summer.

Rural Municipality of Lac du Bonnet – Fire Smart Program Survey

The wildfires of 2025 significantly impacted our municipality and our residents. Wildfire risk mitigation is a key priority for the municipality. Everyone has a role to play to help reduce fire risk and prevent future loss. As such, the RM of Lac du Bonnet is developing a Wildfire Mitigation Strategy that we ask all residents to support and participate in. Here’s what we are working on, and how you can become involved…

1. A specialized company is being contracted to conduct a Community Wildfire Assessment to determine existing risks and mitigation strategies that would work in our area.

2. A Wildfire Mitigation Strategy will be developed and implemented based on the recommendations from the assessment.

3. The Fire Smart Program will be a cornerstone of the strategy that residents can use to manage vegetation in areas where structures are built in the forest (i.e. rural housing).

To help us gauge public understanding and current/future usage of the Fire Smart Program, we would ask that you complete the following survey to help us determine ways the RM can better inform and support area residents.

The survey will only take 5 minutes to complete and is being administered by Community Futures Winnipeg River (third party). Questions can be directed to John Fleming, Emergency Coordinator at mec@lacdubonnet.com.

Thank you for taking the time to provide your input.

Survey deadline is April 30, 2026. Complete online using this link… https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/LdBFireSafetyProgram

Manitoba Government Paving of Provincial Road (“PR”) 433 Project and a few other updates

Background

The history of paving PR 433 dates back over two decades, with traction picking up several years ago. In 2022 your GHHOA created a petition and Rita Lofto, our President personally collected nearly 800 signatures that summer.   In October that year, she contacted the MLA for the Lac Du Bonnet area, Wayne Ewasko and in November attended to the Legislature Building where the petition was presented to the Highways Minister at the time, Doyle Piwniuk. Then, in the spring of 2023, your GHHOA was invited to an announcement where the Provincial Government committed to the paving of 433. The GHHOA would like to thank the RM of Lac Du Bonnet council for their perseverance in relation to this project. They remained dedicated to seeing this through by building relationships with the new government, presenting and participating in countless meetings and passing multiple resolutions to move the project forward.

Update

The Province has recently released preliminary drawings of the project. For those of you that can read the drawings they are provided below.  PR433 Location Plan Otherwise, the proposed plan is roughly as follows.   Beginning from the intersection where the paving currently stops (Lee River Road) the road will be widened and will include an active transportation lane on the right hand side as you travel towards the Coppermine area. The active transportation lane will be on the existing road, and the widening will occur on the left. This active transportation lane will run all the way to the end of 433 (Osprey). The hill near Leeshurland will be leveled for safety. There will still be an intersection where Lee River Road meets Cape Coppermine.

Construction, in some way, is planned to begin in the spring of 2026.

The GHHOA would like to thank the RM of Lac Du Bonnet council for their perseverance in relation to this project. They remained dedicated to seeing this through by building relationships with the new government, presenting and participating in countless meetings and passing multiple resolutions to move the project forward.  We would also like to thank Rita (President of GHHOA) and James (past Vice President of GHHOA)  for their hard work in promoting the petition and working with local representatives in government on this project.  Once complete, this upgrade will bring huge benefits to all the communities it impacts.

Paving of Cape Coppermine past Osprey

The RM plans to request a quote to continue the paving past Osprey.   As the road past Osprey is an RM road, any plans of paving would need to be approved by way of a local improvement plan. Essentially this means any further paving would be cost shared between the RM and property owners, subject to a vote by the property owners. Expect to see more information on that once the project begins.

Hearts & Heroes Fundraiser Update

The GHHOA voted unanimously to donate a silent auction prize of patio furniture to this worthwhile fundraising social. The social raised over $11,000 toward fire and emergency response services. The RM of Lac Du Bonnet Council was extremely appreciative of our donation.

A big thank you to Rita for bringing this worthwhile cause to our attention and for her work in organizing the purchase and delivery of our donation.

Granite Fire Committee

Huge thanks to Ray Senez, a homeowner in our community, for all the hard work he put into making our fire skid project happen. He pulled together seven groups, organized everything from training to equipment, and got it all across the finish line.  We couldn’t have done it without him.

Thank You to the Granite Fire Committee

Thank you to the Granite Fire Committee for contributing $3500 towards a trailer and equipment for the Granite Hills and Cape Copper Mine area fire protection group. The committee is made up of a member from each of Cape Coppermine Association, Granite Hills Estates Home Owners Association, Rivers Edge Association, as well as home owner reps from Blue Heron, Widgeon Row and Osprey Crescent in addition to the Granite Rec Park.

The contribution allowed us to receive a fire skid generously donated by Global Medic to the RM of Lac Du Bonnet. The equipment will be located at the Granite Rec Park during the fire season where it is available to be used by individuals that have received training on it’s operation. A training session was held this fall at the town fire hall where we received instructions from the Deputy Fire Chief and John Fleming.

We expect to hold additional training sessions again in the spring at the Granite Rec Park. In addition we hope to raise some additional funds which will allow us to purchase a couple of back pack sprayer units to add to the trailer.

I would also like to thank Debbie Clement the Treasurer of The Granite Hills Estates Home Owners association for her hard work in helping to coordinate the collection of funds from the individuals and associations.
